Currywurst

Labels: , ,

Today, I had for lunch 2 things I don't normally eat - hot dog with ketchup and almost anything with Indian curry seasoning. Currywurst apparently has long been a favorite street food in Germany. It's fried whole or sliced beef and pork knockwurst smothered in tomato sauce flavored with Indian curry and served with fries.

I read about it in a mystery crime novel originally written in German, Time Heals No Wounds (A Baltic Sea Crime) by Hendrik Falkenberg. It's one of the free book choices for Amazon Prime members' Kindle First program. Check it out.

There are many recipes on the web and you can adjust the amount of curry powder to your taste. As I said I hardly cook nor eat anything with Indian curry powder so I used very little of it  just to have that distinct curry flavor. I actually like it and would increase the amount of curry powder next time.

Currywurst
beef knockwurst
curry tomato sauce
freshly cooked fat fries
  • Fry whole knockwurst in oil until heated through. Remove from oil and serve sliced or whole topped with curry tomato sauce, and fries; mayonnaise optional.

curry tomato sauce
1 teaspoon curry powder
2 cups grated Roma tomatoes
½ teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoon golden raw sugar
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
1 teaspoon onion powder
a pinch of garlic powder
1 pinch of finely ground white pepper
  • In a small stainless steel pot, lightly toast curry powder over medium-low heat for a minute until fragrant. Stir in the rest of ingredients and simmer until very thick. Adjust seasoning to taste.
yep, I ate the whole thing
